It's good to hear Robert's struggle was short. It's clear he led a full happy life with family in Columbia. He and I lived in the same neighborhood, Don Holland too, and I recall good times in high school. He and RC could be a hoot. Did he go to Victory or Wray? I can't recall. My sympathy to his family and friends.

Saddened to hear of Robert's passing, I had talked to him just before the 50th reunion last year. He hadn't attended any reunion, and I asked him if he was planning to come. He said that he wasn't interested in stuff like that, but he hoped we would all have a great time. We talked about our lives since we had seen each other last....in 1966 as we were leaving Lackland Air Force Base and basic training. We were both squad leaders in our group, 4 squad leaders with 52 men divided among them, at the time it seemed like the blind leading the blind. I don't think the experience would have been as positive as it was without his experience at military school, his guidance was immense. We talked of our children, he was very proud of his sons and daughters and their success, no doubt as a result of his guidance. We were still friends, even though we had not even spoken since our youth, we had gone through a life changing experience together. Robert , or "Rock", as he really liked to be called, was a part of a memory of a wonderful time in my life. He will be missed, especially by his family, but also by those of us who crossed paths with him. He was one of the best of us. RIP.

Robert....Rock......RZ....... I will miss you! All three of you!  And I still Love you in manly kinda way !!

You, RC (Robert Caldwell) and Hooker Holland (Don) invited me into your world of fun,
friendship and mischief and I will always be grateful!!! One of these days, ALL will be gone except
memories and you and the rest of you reading this BS have made it wonderful for me!
Many thanks and now on to RZ.

RZ, I would love to visit with you about the time we returned to your home
late at night to climb through a window to get toilet paper to roll Jewell Hill's home. The next
day we returned to help Mr. Hill clean up the mess? Duh!

Oh! the time you dropped the bowling ball upstairs over you Dad's room! The BIG ROCK
was Pizzed!!!!

How about the time we (VR, DH,RZ) took Don Holland's Mother's car to Lake Junaluska
to see RC and it ran hot because the  sign on the front that said "Here we come Round Man"
(Sorry RC)

And the time we went to your home in Blowing Rock and slipped over to App State
to party and couldn't  return because  of the fog. We stopped in the middle of Hwy 321 and could not see
two feet? NO body believed us?

George Jacksons? Meadow Brook?  Holland wouldn't know!  He was hanging out with Ted Turner  at
McCallie Military  so we had to drink his beer! We did welcome our designated driver home at Christmas!

Remember? Your Mom, "Forney" ( I loved her) drafted me to ride with her to pick you at Catawba.
She thought that I was a positive influence LOL.

Whew! This could go on for days and is quite self serving to help me grieve out loud for a good friend.

RZ: I love you and you will be missed by many ...and you know it!!!

Rock's wife, Paula, said that "he was always comfortable in his own skin." That's a nice way to live. Thanks for the great memories from all of you. They are important and it's why The Counts CD is called Lasting Memories. If you haven't heard any of it you can go to: www.thecountsband.com and listen to parts of each song. It will immerse you back into those no less complex, but somewhat simpler days. Listen to Marti Wetzell's voice on "At Last", even Etta James would appreciate it.

Van, about the "round man" thing, I now live with a chef and have to swim every day to fight off the consequences!

What fabulous memories I love you have Robert! That's what life is all about… The memories that we cherish.

Loved reading about all the escapades have the Three Musketeers, Van!   And, Lamar had a very special bond with him on many levels.
