CHINA GROVE - Charlie Winford Barnes Jr., 62, of China Grove, passed peacefully at his home Sept. 27, 2012.

Born Oct. 18, 1949, in Gastonia, he was the son of the late Lucy Donnelly Barnes and Charlie Winford Barnes Sr.

Mr. Barnes earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte; and Master of Arts degrees from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard.

Mr. Barnes was employed with the Lincoln County Mental Health Department and served 28 years at the W.G. Hefner VA Medical Center as a clinical social worker. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Salisbury.

Survivors include sons Christian Barnes and wife Luciana, Thad Barnes and wife Lisa; daughter Elizabeth Cameron and husband Mark; grandson Dylan Cameron; along with several sisters.

Visitation and Services: Visitation will be held from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30 at Summersett Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 12 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1 at the W.G. Hefner Medical Center Chapel. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. at the U.S. National Cemetery, Statesville Boulevard location.
