Pete joined the Air Force in 1974 and was stationed at Beale Air Force Base, California until 1976 when he left the military to move with his family to Scottsbluff to begin his practice at Bluff’s Medical Clinic.  The Physician of the Year Award was presented to Pete by the Nebraska Medical Association on April 25, 2003. He felt honored to be presented with this award.  Pete loved practicing medicine and taking care of his patients. In addition to his medical practice he was also Director of Panhandle Community Services and Associate Director of UNMC’s Rural Family Practice Residency Program. One of his greatest loves was teaching young doctors and preparing them for their careers in family medicine. He was a great teacher and mentor.  Pete practiced until July of 2014 when he had to retire suddenly to go to Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Hospital in Denver to be treated for acute leukemia and begin the process for a stem cell ransplant.  He and Jann returned to Scottsbluff after a successful transplant and were blessed to have 18 months where Pete could play golf, enjoy his hobbies and he and Jann could travel. As a couple, Pete and Jann realized how fortunate and blessed they were to have so many people and groups support them throughout his stem cell transplant and recovery; it’s what kept them going.  Pete is survived by his wife, Jann of Scottsbluff; son, Matt of Apex, North Carolina; grandchildren, Jake and Lauren of Apex, North Carolina; and daughter, Kristin of Seattle. He is also survived by his brothers, Klayton (Fran) Johnson, Rodney (Linda) Johnson and Kenneth (Bobbie) Johnson all of Scottsbluff; and sister, Marlene Kuxhausen of Minneapolis. In addition, sisters-in law, Donna (Jack) Lewis of Great Falls, Montana, Kay (Bilse) Robinson of Albion; brother-in–law, Bob (Lynn) Doering of Scottsbluff; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters-in-law, Mary Johnson and Delores Johnson; and brother-in-law Richard Kuxhausen. Pete will be dearly missed by family, friends, and colleagues.
