In the early morning of October 23, 1983, a truck turned onto an access road leading to the Marines' compound, crashed through a barbed wire fence and a gate and drove into the lobby of the Marine headquarters.

The suicide bomber (an Iranian member of the terrorist group, Hezzbollah) detonated the explosives which were equivalent to 5,400 kg (12,000 pounds) of TNT. The force of the explosion collapsed the four-story cinder-block building into rubble killing 241 American servicemen: 220 Marines, 18 Navy personnel and three Army soldiers.

This incident was the deadliest single-day death toll for the United States Marine Corps since World War II's Battle of Iwo Jima.

They came in Peace Friends from a Far Flung Land
They came in Peace Willing to Lend a Hand

They camp in Peace Nervous and Alone
They camp in Peace Miles from Home

They came in Peace Husbands, Brothers, Sons
They came in Peace Heros Every One

They came in Peace that Hot October Day
They Rest in Peace
And for Them now We Pray

Semper Fi

Rest in Heavenly Peace My Brother Jack,
You Are Thought of Often and Loved Always.

What a sacrifice. May Americans always honor the memories of Jack and all his fellow warriors who have stood post since the beginning of our Republic so that we may enjoy the liberties guaranteed by our Constitution. May we all be prepared to give the "last full measure of devotion" to preserve those liberties for current and future Americans.
