Who could forget that amazing smile? Mel was a dear friend at Northfield and in her final years. We spent some  wonderful times together even as she battled the ovarian cancer that would end her life. She was able to return to NMH for our 45th reunion, an event she thoroughly enjoyed.

After graduation, I was invited to spend the weekend at Mel's house on Long Island and attend the now infamous beach party! Then we parted company and I went off to Wheaton, Mel to Douglass. My older brother Jake was at Rutgers at the time and he met Mel and was dazzled. Mel fell In love with a good friend of his. Years passed, Mel met and married her husband Allan Smith and they settled in the Boston area. Just before our 45th reunion, Mel and I discovered we had roots in Marion, MA, a small town near the Cape. She and Allan had a second house there. They loved to sail and kept a boat in town. I have family in Marion and so we met up again. She loved to garden and we often went looking for daylillies to add to her collection. I would meet her in Cambridge for lunch while she was still working at the MIT Architecture library. She bravely wore her baseball cap to hide the loss of her hair from the latest round of chemo. Nothing slowed her down. Each remission was shorter in duration and finally she and Allan had to cancel their long awaited trip to Australia where she was looking forward to reconnecting with Sandy Magoon Johnson. She died several months later. Sadly, her husband died the following year.
