Andrew D. "Andy" Colby, 69, of Marblehead, passed away at his home on August 1, 2011. He was the husband of Norma (Rogers) Colby with whom he shared 48 years of marriage. Born in Melrose on August 7, 1941, he was the son of the late Howard and Jean (Fowler) Colby. His family lived in Melrose in the winter and Marblehead neck in the summer. The family belonged to the Corinthian Yacht Club, Salem Willows Yacht Club, Tedesco Country Club and the University Club in Boston. During the summers Andy worked at the family owned business in Boston (Andrew Dutton Company) which has been in the family for three generations. Andy attended public schools in Marblehead until the second year of high school when he transferred to Cushing Academy in Ashburnham. Junior and Senior year he transferred to Northfield Mount Hermon, Mount Hermon, MA. He received an undergraduate degree from Wharton (University of PA) in Philadelphia in 1963 and an MBA from Boston University in 1970 (on the GI bill). After graduating, Andy entered the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant through the ROTC at University of PA in October 1963. He trained at Ft. Eustis, VA and was stationed at Ft. Knox, KY (the men in Andy's unit were filmed in the movie Goldfinger when Pussy Galore gassed the soldiers at the gold depository). After 3 years in an Army reserve unit in Boston he was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. Andy took great pride in serving his country. Upon discharge from the Army, Andy worked for the following employers; Bank of Boston, Paine Webber Jackson & Curtis, Union Mutual Management, E F Hutton, Bank of Boston (2nd time) and National Grand Bank of Marblehead. Andy was an avid outdoorsman. He loved the ocean and was an active fisherman, scuba diver and an occasional sailor. He also loved skiing, writing poetry and landscape painting with oils, but in recent years had little time to develop these interests. Andy also enjoyed duck hunting in the fall with his brother Al, but stopped when his brother was killed in a hunting accident in Delaware. His favorite types of music were bluegrass, gospel, Scottish and Cape Breton. He loved spending time with his wife and daughters doing different things around their home and their church or going to different concerts and events. He enjoyed playing chess with his daughter Karen and having discussions with Susan about her career and life plans. In addition to his wife, Andy is survived by two daughters, Karen Colby of Marblehead and Susan Colby Johnson of Salem; a sister, Ann Stager and her husband Carl of Canada; a brother, Robert F. Colby of Chelsea; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Al Colby. - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/wickedlocal-marblehead/obituary.aspx?n=andrew-d-colby&pid=152868954#sthash.WzALMEym.dpuf
