Ernie was a great friend-- or, at least I thought of him as a friend. And I think everyone else thought of him that way too. Ernie and I sat at the same table in West Hall for a while. That was lucky for me because he gave me some useful tips on how to dress better -- so that I did not look like the farmer that I actually was.  He showed up unexpectedly at a pre-planning meeting that we had at NMH .. before our 40th . I think the 40th. Ernie and I  had lunch at Rua's there in Northfield, and then he asked me to give him a tour of the MH campus. He drove..a big car...a Lincoln Town Car. We went down to the lower soccer fields and then up to the gymnasium and then we looked at the  baseball diamond and then to the MH Chapel and then, finally past Crossley. He said it was great to see the school again. He also said that his cancer was in remission, and that he would be OK. He had gone through a number of ups and downs before, and he would be OK again. He was sure he would be.. Well.. that was the last time I saw him or any of us saw him.  Jack Welch, CEO, and biggest ever kahuna of General Electric showed up at his memorial service in Pittsfield, MA ,and gave a eulogy, just before Kim Boyle gave a short eulogy also. Jack Welch was a golfing buddy of Ernie's --I believe Ernie lived right on the grounds of the PGA golf course in Jupiter, Florida. I remember Kim saying that he felt ill at ease having to follow Jack Welch at that memorial service! My regret was that I was not there to hear what was said and that I could not personally pay my respects to Ernie. By the way, everyone else called him "Spike" Sagalyn. I just never could. Spike did not seem right to me. It was not a name for a great guy like Ernie.
