I moved to Glen Rock in 1959 knowing no one. Richie ("LD") Long was a lanky, friendly, up beat all around good guy who quickly befriended me. He lived a few blocks away and we both were would-be "car guys" and enjoyed working together on his fathers Triumph TR-3 after school. He was an accomplished athlete and was active on the Junior Prom Committee and yearbook.
Staff Sargent Richard Long died in South Vietnam on January 4, 1968. He gave his life along with fellow veterans and our classmates Bob Janowitz and Darren Higdon.
I considered Rich a good friend. He was my chemistry partner in high school and probably was the main reason why I passed that course. I remember that he was so very proud of his brother, George. Rich and I went to the prom together and I recall he had his father's car which we drove down rt.208 (?) for a spin. I lost touch with Rich after graduation and have to say that I was shocked when I heard about his death. I did not know he had joined the military. I eventually married an Army soldier and often think of Rich. He was truly a thoughtful and kind person.
