Dennis and I walked together to and from first and second grade at Lincoln School every day. One winter morning a couple 4th grade bullies tried to force me to eat a frozen dog turd. Denis pushed him away, grabbed my hand and we ran as fast a we could, but they caught up with us, pushed us down, and shoved our faces in the snow so hard Denis' glasses broke. He was my first hero and I will never forget him.
