Terry was born 24 June 1943. After high-school graduation, he attended (in this order) San Fernando Valley State College (now California State College, Northridge), Los Angeles Pierce College, and California State College, Dominguez Hills. He never actually completed a college degree, but he said that he learned what he needed to know. A brain injury from a 1993 motorcar accident left him in a coma for many weeks. Terry died early that spring, leaving behind his wife of eighteen years, Jackie, and three school-age children. At the time, he was living in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he worked as a highly paid software designer for IBM.
