LISTEN IN ON OCTUBAFEST
SOURCE: By Rhonda Holman, The Wichita Eagle
PRINTED: Tuesday, October 17, 1995

WHAT: Wichita State University's annual celebration of brass' lowest instruments, in three recitals

SPECIAL WORK: Today's recital will feature John Stevens' "Power," a piece that was included on the program at the request of the late Melissanne Saudade. Saudade, a WSU junior who was to have played tuba on the recital and to have been featured on Oct. 26, took her own life two weeks ago. "It was a shock," said Black, assistant professor at WSU and principal tubist of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra. He described the 1978 work by Stevens, which has been a regular Octubafest closing number, as "fairly bright and uptempo."

Melissa,
You've been a friend from as far back as I can remember (thanks to our mothers for being drinking buddies!!). Atari, rats, home science lab experiments etc... I miss you and have for a long time now. You always exhibited the creative spark and had the talents to allow them to flourish. I will see you again!!!

I remember Melissa. We used to ride to school together back in the first grade. When I heard the news of her death I thought "Life is so fleeting". Then I remember how she lived. It's amazing how people change through the years. Melissa was always a bit misunderstood in this world and I hope she is in a better place. Love you and miss you Melissa.

I had some good times with her. We made a trip to Boston to hunt down guitars one time, and we had fun. I guess I was attracted to the fact that she was different and wasnt ashamed of that. I think if some people took the time to get to know her better they would have been suprised.

Anyways, I dont know what happened to her, heard all kinds of things but ultimately she is in my thoughts from time to time and I hope shes ok...

Oh yeah... didnt she beat up a guy at our school? That was classic...

Melissa,

I can't believe you are gone,it was a shock. You were the first person I met in Greenfield after I moved here from Mohawk after being expelled at the end of 7th grade. A kind and caring person to your friends and largely misunderstood by all that were not close and sometimes even those.
It was nice to meet someone that was like me "different".
We had some great times together and also helped each other through some dark times. The only girl I knew that had the "STONES" to beat a boy up in school, how I loved that one.
I will try not to feel sorrow but to be happy that you have found your peace, like you I have always struggled with that darkness that caused this.......
Goodbye my friend, my friendship and love go with you forever.

DEVIN
