GREENSBORO Deacon Darell Laymont Baker, Sr., 57, was born on February 11,1961, and departed this life on August 15, 2018. Deacon Baker is the oldest son of Apostle Horace C. Baker and Evangelist Bettye J. Baker of Greensboro, North Carolina. Deacon Darell received his education from the Ben L. Smith High School in Greensboro, North Carolina and was a part of the graduating class of 1979. He later graduated from Guilford Technical Community College with a degree in auto cechanics. Through a mutual friend he met, fell in love with and married his wife of 36 years, Vernette Baker. From this union God blessed them with two beautiful children, Helema and Darell Jr. (DJ). He worked for UPS for twenty-three years until his retirement in 2008. Deacon Darell was a life-long, faithful member of Fruit of the Spirit Ministries, serving on the Gospel Choir, Men's Choir, Deacon Board, Kitchen and Transportation ministry. After his retirement, he volunteered for Fruit of the Spirit Ministries daycare, earning the nickname ''Uncle Darell.'' A manservant after God's own heart, he loved helping others, oftentimes being a reliable automobile mechanic and/or handyman. He had passion for preparing food, cooking for large occasions and serving meals to the homeless. Deacon Darell enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling to the beach, large family gatherings and working on cars. He loved to make others laugh and was always known for the loudest laugh in the room. Left to cherish his precious memories are: wife, Vernette Baker, two children Helema Baker and Darell Baker, Jr. (Kendra) of Greensboro, NC, four grandchildren, Kylah, Elise, Zaria and Jordan, his father and mother, Apostle Horace C. Baker and Evangelist Bettye J. Baker of Greensboro, NC, four siblings, Angie Baker of Greensboro, NC, Roy Baker (Melissa) of High Point, NC, Rhonda Baker of Charlotte, NC and Crystal Baker of Greensboro, NC, a host of aunties, nieces, nephews, friends and Fruit of the Spirit Ministries Church family. A celebration of Deacon Darell's life will be held Monday, August 20, 2018, at New Light Missionary Baptist Church, 1105 Willow Rd., Greensboro NC 27401.
