John Alexander Barrett

GREENSBORO John Alexander Barrett, 57, of Greensboro, died Tuesday, December 4, 2018. John was born on October 3, 1961, to Hugh Martin Barrett, Sr. and Patricia Gilmore Barrett. One of five kids, he grew up in Rolling Roads in Greensboro, NC, and graduated from Smith High School in 1979. John had a huge, tender, loving heart, and would give the shirt off his back even if it were the last thing he had to give. Often called the "mayor" of the community he lived in, he was a mentor and father figure to many. John loved to line dance, shag, and to play cornhole at "The Bearded Goat" in downtown Greensboro. One of his favorite pastimes was singing karaoke with his late twin sister Joan. He also loved to run, and completed more than one half-marathon without training. He loved to celebrate life with his many, many, friends, especially when cheering on the Carolina Tar Heels and Carolina Panthers. He enjoyed going to The Summit Church and, above all, loved God. An animal lover, John adored the pets he had throughout the years, most recently his labs Macy and Lucy. John dearly loved his family and friends; they were his world. The greatest love of John's life was his daughter Allyson Grace; she was the light of his life. John is preceded in death by his parents, twin sister Joan Marie Barrett, and brother Hugh "Martin" Barrett, Jr. He is survived by his daughter Allyson Grace Barrett, aunt Mary Anne "Midge" Barrett, sisters Rebecca "Becky" Dolinger (Tom) and Vicki Barrett (Howard), nieces Christy McNeal (Jonathan and children) and Rebecca Byerly (Khuram), nephews Tom Dolinger (Leah and children), John Bishop Byerly (Amelia), and Patrick Barrett, former wife Amy Foushee, daughter Jordan, grandson Noah, as well as extended family and friends. His service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 15 in the theater at Westover Church, located at 505 Muir's Chapel Rd., Greensboro, NC 27410. There will be a celebration of life preceding the service. The location will be announced at the service. Causal dress is welcomed. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Guilford County Animal Shelter, located at 4525 W. Wendover Ave., Greensboro, NC 27409. Arrangements by Triad Cremation & Funeral Service of Greensboro.
