Patricia Newcome

Patricia Swinney Newcome, 68, of Portland died Sunday, December 12, 2010, at her residence. Born January 5, 1942, in Greenville, Mississippi, to R.C. and Virginia Patterson Swinney, she graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1963 and was a member Alpha Omega Pi sorority. She was a resident of Portland for the past 47 years, a board member and elementary school teacher at Montrose Academy for many years, a board member and tireless volunteer for the Guachoya Cultural Arts Center in Lake Village and an active member of the Portland United Methodist Church and taught Mission Friends at the Portland Baptist Church.


She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Robert Benton Newcome of Portland; two sons, Robert Benton Newcome, III, and wife Nicole of Little Rock and John Patterson Newcome and wife Gwen of Portland; a daughter, Elizabeth Pugh Newcome and companion Jason Eichin of North Little Rock; and six grandchildren, Ben Newcome, Olivia Pickens, Logan Newcome, Riley Newcome, Nicholas Newcome and Lela Eichin. She was the devoted caregiver of her uncle, Riley B. Naron, of Greenville, MS. She is also survived by many friends and family in Mississippi and Arkansas

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, December 15, in the Portland United Methodist Church with Rev. Terrie Lynn Bunnell officiating. Burial will be in the Portland Cemetery. Pallbearers are Bobby Duke, Robert Patterson, Bruce Patterson, Joey Williamson, Juan Hernandez, Jess Manning, David Mencer and Eddie Scherm. Honorary pallbearers are Emery Skelton, Neill Sloan, Jack Edwards, Pat Patterson, Dr. Jack Burge, Lephiew Dennington and Ben Hawkins. The family will receive friends at their home in Portland from 6-8 Tuesday evening.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Portland United Methodist Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 400, Portland, AR 71663 or to the Guachoya Cultural Art Center, 1652 Highways 65 & 82 S., Lake Village, AR 71653. Patsy was a good friend in high school, a sane and wholesome and fun person. Looks like she was so throughout her life; I'm sorry I did not see her much after high school.

May the Lord grant her mercy and Resurrection.
