Jim Veal (1970)

A neighbor of mine, and one of life's truly genuine characters. A musician and a Doctor, but more importantly one of the nicest people you would ever meet. He was a close friend of Andy Alexander's. One night a couple of years ago, Andy began telling me about Dunkin and all he was doing with his life at the time of his death, and it was a lot. He died way too young.I'm thinking he was like, 36?

Dunkin graduated from -- I think -- Yale med school and was a doctor in Nashville. In about 1985, Kelly Smith, Hilton O'Neal and I reconnected with Dunkin and went to Nashville several times to record in his studio (we always joked that he practiced medicine to generate enough income to support his music habit). I'd always call him when I happened to be up there, and we'd meet for dinner or a drink.

Not long after our last recording session, we got a call from his wife telling us he'd had a heart attack while jogging in a park near his hospital -- think he was 38 at the time.
