Jim Veal (1970)

Carol was almost a gothic tragedy. Who among us doesn't have memories of Carol and Walt Taylor? My Mother taught Emily Joyce, their Daughter, in elementary school. She would be about 41 now.

Carol was cute and sweet and smart and wise beyond her years. The last time I saw her was at Lillo's. I don't remember what year. She came up to our table and spoke to me. I had no idea who she was. She was unrecognizable."Jimmy, it's CAROL!" The years had been hard on her, but her spirit and impishness were intact. We had the greatest conversation that night, during which she reminded me of sitting next to her one night at One Block East, with Edmund behind the bar. She said, "Veal you were so drunk and you were trying to tell me some serious story and I was just nodding my head, half paying attention and you leaned over and kissed me!" I said, well, I don't remember that but was I a good kisser? and Carol replies, "No you were gross" and laughed out loud.
