Susan Schroeder Jarvis

After graduating from U of M in 1964, I began a career in Human Resources. I started with the Detroit Free Press and worked there until I married Scott McDougal, a medical student, in 1967. We moved to NYC where Scott was in his last year at Cornell Med. I continued my career at Memorial Sloan Kettering, and when we moved to Cleveland a year later, I woked at several different places and went on to be the Director of Human Resources at a large Cleveland law firm. I retired from there when my daughter, Molly, was born and we moved to San Antonio. From there we returned to Cleveland, and then went on to Hanover, NH and Nashiville, TN. There were other stops in between- eighteen moves in all.

After twenty-five years Scott and I divorced, and I returned to NH and began a career in real estate. Today I am retired.

My daughter is a lawyer and lives in a suburb of Boston , and I make it a point to see her often.

I've lost touch with just about everyone from GPHS, but Lucy Day and I were room mates for most of college, and I have seen her a couple of times, and we stay in touch. Alison Taylor Johnson and I had a reunion at her parent's summer place in NH a few years back, and I hear from her at Christmas. She was my first close friend at Maire Elementary when my family moved to GP when I was in fourth grade. It was great to reconnect with her.

On January 21, 2010 I married an old beau, Dick Jarvis, with whom I reconnected after 45 years. That explains why I am once again in Michigan living in the same town as Alison Taylor Johnson. I feel as though I have come full circle.

How could I forget? It happened in Mr. Bishop's chemistry class- it was his first year of teaching, and he was always nervous when we were doing experiments. I did not make it easier for him!

We were testing an unknown for an acetate, (I think) and I got too close to the flame- the fluid spit out across the table and hit Dick Law in the head and shirt. He actually had a few bald spots that were obvious through that red hair! Dick ran out of the room, and stayed clear of me ever after- even when we ran into each other at Michigan! His hair did fill in, but he never trusted me. I understood!

Mr. Bishop addressed me each day thereafter as "Miss Peach Queen- year of the blight."

I did not take chemistry in college, and am glad that students now wear goggles, etc. I'm also grateful that no one else was hurt. Gloria Schmidt, and Pat Mullen were near by, but escaped my carelessness.

Sorry, Dick, I've never forgotten.

I only have one residence, but it is no longer in Traverse City, MI. I moved back to North Conway, NH a year after my husband’s death.
