Friday afternoon collision claims the lives of two men

Death has claimed the lives of wo more of the area's young people.  Steve Lawrence, 26, of Phil Campbell and Barry Blankensopp, 21, of Haleyville, died Friday as a result of a two vehicle collision on Highway 5 South, near the entrance to Dolphin Road.

The accident occurred at approximately 4 p.m. and immediately took the life of Lawrence who was driving a red 1991 Toyota 4x4 pickup.  Blankensopp, a passenger in the Toyota, was rushed to Burdick-West Hospital an then airlifted to Birmingham.  He died enroute to the hospital according to officials.

The Toyota collided with an 18-wheeler Marshall Durbin feed truck that was travelling south, driven by Walter Nathaniel Bennett.  Lawrence and Blakensopp was reportedly returning home of work, going north toward Haleyville.  The two young men were said to have been partners in a cement construction business.

Bennett was admitted to Burdick-West Hospital after complaining with possible leg injuries.  He was discharged on Sunday.

Lawrence was a 1984 graduate of Phil Campbell High School.  Blakensopp graduated in 1989 from Haleyville High School.  See accompanying obituary on page 2A for list of survivors.

A one vehile accident, just one week before on Aug. 4, took the life of 19-year-old Brian Miller, of Haleyville.  The accident occurred on Ninth Avenue, between Dime Road and Highway 5.
