I remember very clearly that Richard was nice to me too when I was an outcast of sorts. I am happy to read that he has five children and three grandchildren, I am sure he passed on his gift of kindness to them. I am very sad to hear of his passing.
You never really know what effect you are going to have on a person. I have not spoken to him since graduating high school 35 years ago, but I think of him every once in awhile as an example of how to be nice to someone even when others are not.
