 Ann Bernas, 61, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014, at Providence Alaska Medical Center, surrounded by loved ones. Ann was born on Jan. 23, 1953, in Chicago, Ill., to Leo Anthony and Ann Carroll. She graduated from Thornton High School in 1971. She married Michael Bernas on Jan. 20, 1973, and was the proud wife of an Airforce Tech Sargent for 20 years. In 1976, she became the mother to her only child, Michael Bernas II, of Anchorage, Alaska. Ann was a career civil servant who was medically retired from the V.A., as an Administrative Assistant in 2005. We will deeply miss her courageous spirit, which helped her endure 35 years of battling Multiple Sclerosis (M.S.). She never complained about the daily struggles and discomfort she experienced. Ann enjoyed cooking, reading, being with her family and her pets. She had a great passion for dogs, especially Labrador Retrievers. She will be remembered as a selfless lady who had the gift of gab, always concerned about the well-being of those around her. Ann is now in a place free of wheelchairs, walkers, M.S., transfusions and pain. She is running around playing with her beloved dogs at the Rainbow Bridge and enjoying all of the things she couldn't physically do all of these years. We will miss her tough, no-nonsense, kind-hearted, fun-loving, unselfish and truly unforgettable spirit. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Michael Bernas; her son, Michael Bernas II and his partner, Kristin VanCleaf; her beloved grandson, Hunter Bernas; and former daughter-in-law, Joely Bernas of Anchorage; her sister, B.J. Kirby; and niece, Amber Kirby of North Carolina; and many other dear friends. Ann's wishes of being an anatomical donation to science came true. She will return to us after her last journey of helping others through science, and her ashes will be spread at a later date. A small, private celebration of life was recently held.
