I met Geno at TTHS in sophomore gym class and we became close friends. We played hockey together at those late night games at Glenwood and at Dutch Masters. He could outskate anyone and had a knack for putting the puck on the net – I lost count of the number of goals I scored off of his rebounds. I used to tell him he reminded me of Yvan Cournoyer on the Canadiens. He was that type of player.
We were at my house on the last afternoon of his life. We were planning to go downtown that night with another one of our friends. As it turned out, he didn't come with us. I found out what had happened at 6:00am the next morning. It was the 4th of July. If only he had been with me that Saturday night …
