The Beatles at Shea Stadium

There was a guy who lived on my street who had asked me out repeatedly...he was a couple years older and already in college. I really did NOT want to go out with him...until he showed up at my door with two tickets to see the Beatles at Shea Stadium. I remember the Beatles landing on the field in a helicopter...until then, I'd been able to keep myself in check, but you couldn't hear anything anyway, so I joined the screaming. Didn't hear one song...just screaming the entire concert. I still have the program and the ticket stubbs.

Sandy Gorton invited me.  She just happened to get two tickets from the owner of the Mets, M. Donald Grant.  She was childsitting for his son in Cedarhurst, LI, at the time.  The seats were about the tenth row behind the Mets' dugout on the first base side.  I don't remember the helicopter - maybe it came before we got there - but I recall the Beatles on a platform at the pitcher's mound, using the same big Vox amps they used for indoor performances.  As Diana said, we couldn't hear a note of music through the hysterical screaming all around us.   Half the time we couldn't even see them because people, almost entirely girls, were running across our seatbacks toward the field.  There were at least four levels of police barrier fences on the field and a sea of blue of New York's finest.  The cops must have been in great shape because as soon as someone managed to reach the field, they picked them up and literally tossed them back into the stands.  I still have a picture in my mind of  what seemed like a thousand flashes of white underpants as the girls dived onto the field and then were thrown through the air back into the stands.  I still can't figure out which mental/emotional/ historical category to file that in.  [don't say it, Laurie :) ]

You're right, Tom. The Beatles took a helicopter from their hotel to Queens, then arrived on the field in a armored van. New York authorities wouldn't allow a helicopter on the field. Had to look it up. After all, it's been over 50 years. I don't remember hearing anything or seeing much (although my date brought binoculars). I do remember that after the concert, my date grew an additional set of arms while we were having ice cream in the Howard Johnson parking lot. He wound up telling me that he was sorry he asked me out because I was too young for a college guy like himself. He never spoke to me again, but this 17-year old opportunist got to see the Beatles!
