Doreen passed away on February 9, 2022 here in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. She was heroically battling her third bout of cancer, this time in her brain, and she also had MS, but she never let anything slow her down. She was always wanting to GO! Live life to the fullest, even up to just days before she died. I got to know Doreen really well on our many trips to Kona and she was always anxious to show me another one of her favorite places! She wanted me to try snorkeling at the little beach next to the Royal Kona Resort, even after I told her that I couldn't get my left ear under water. While we (I) was floundering out there, I stood up and asked her: "Is there a way to go snorkeling and not get my ear wet?" She quickly admitted, "No." But she so wanted me to experience the JOY of snorkeling: HER JOY! She was that way about everything and that's what I miss so much about not getting to visit her here in Kona! We had such FUN floating in the beautiful turquoise waters of Kua Bay in her floating tubes, just freely riding the waves! We visited many places for Happy Hour that always brings back happy memories of her as we pass those restaurants. She was such a FUN-loving person who shared our love of Kona! We miss her so much, but know she's up there wreaking havoc in the heavens, trying all sorts of new adventures!
Doreen and I knew each other since kindergarten and reconnected at our last high-school reunion. A few years ago when touring the Big Island she became the best host and tour guide ever, her enthusiasm is infectious and will always be part of me.
Classmates and Facebook brought Doreen and I back together after many years of separation after high school. We would converse mostly on FB, and during one of those times, she realized I was a Starbucks connoisseur and collected Starbucks cups from all the states. To my surprise, I received a Hawaiian Starbucks cup from Doreen in the mail. I will always treasure it. I was in Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii and 2021. On the day I tried to visit Doreen, she had one of her treatments and was very tired. We talked on the phone, but I didn't get a chance to see her, even though she lived not far from the airport and only 20 minutes from the resort where I vacationed. We spoke on the phone several times and I'll remember those moments dearly. Missing you Doreen. Suzetta Goward Perkins
