I remember the day Pete was no longer sitting next to me in reading class. We use to protest the war every day in class, oh we really did cause trouble. I think of Pete often.

I met Pete McKague in the 5th grade when I moved to Hayward and started at East Avenue School. Pete was not a competitive person, which set him apart from top acheivers, yet he had a very solid and logical view of the world that seemed to elevate him in non academic ways. He had a group of loyal friends that never took the school establishment very seriously. Pete often developed ideas that tried to estimate how far he could go before there was a result. These self tests often ended badly. It was one such test in which he planned to take a giant dose of pills to see what would happen. He asked me what I thought would result and I told him he'd probably die. He disagreed, and then changed the subject to something else. I really didn't think he'd go ahead with the plan. He did not seem depressed to me, just a bit detached from the school scene, There was obviously something going on in his life that I was not aware of. A few days later we learned that he'd passed away in his sleep from an overdose of sleeping pills. This was a particularly great loss to his mother, who was a widow. Pete's sister Jeannie held the family together through the rest of the school year. I don't know what happened to Jeannie after she graduated. She was quite talented in music.
