Patrick Quinn

Patrick Quinn, 78, passed away on September 10, 2025, in Fouqueure, France. He was born October 24, 1946, in Erie, Pennsylvania, the son of William John and Gertrude Marie (Nuber) Quinn.

Patrick graduated from Academy High School in Erie in 1964. He went on to earn his B.S. degree in English and History from the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada in 1971, and his M.A. in English from the University of Ottawa in 1972. In 1988, he completed his Ph.D. in Philosophy at the University of Warwick in Coventry, England.

Patrick’s distinguished career as an educator and academic leader spanned the globe. He served as Head of English at Campion School in Athens, Greece (1974–1976); Lecturer at the University of Mosul, Iraq (1976–1978); Tutor at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany (1978–1980); and Lecturer with the University of Maryland’s European Division in Heidelberg, Germany (1980–1989). He went on to hold faculty and leadership positions at Pennsylvania State University, Fayetteville State University, the University of Toronto, and Nene College in Northampton, England.

In 1996 he became Managing Director and Lecturer with the Robert Graves Trust at St. John’s College, Oxford University. He later served as Dean of Humanities and Arts at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (2002–2006), Chair of the Department of English at the University of Mississippi (2006–2009), Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences at Chapman University (2009–2012), Professor of Civilization Studies at the Alliance of Civilizations Institute in Istanbul (2012–2015), Provost and Vice Rector of Academic Affairs at the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy (2015–2017), and Dean at the American University of Athens (2017–2020).

Patrick was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and an active member of the New Canterbury Literature Society. He also served as President of the Robert Graves Society.

Beyond his academic accomplishments, Patrick was a lifelong runner, finding joy in long-distance running, and a devoted fan of Cleveland sports teams.

He leaves behind a legacy of scholarship, leadership, and global engagement, remembered fondly by colleagues, students, and friends around the world.
