Diane P. Mapes (1947-2023) Diane Mapes, 76, of Riverside, died peacefully at Kaiser Hospital in Riverside, on October 6, 2023, with her loving family and close friends by her side. Diane graduated from Hemet High School in 1965 and lived in Riverside for over 44 years. She worked for the Riverside County Office of Education as the Director of Children’s Services. Throughout her career she made an impact on the lives of her colleagues and the students she served. In addition to her career, Diane was a member of the Riverside Rancheros. She will be remembered for her love of people, adventure, independent nature, and open-minded approach to life. Diane loved watching all types of sports, including attending all of her children and grandchildren’s sporting events through the years. One of her greatest joys was camping at Doheny State Beach with close friends and family. Diane enjoyed good stories, good wine, campfires and the company of her life-long loyal friends and loved ones. Diane felt holidays were to be celebrated in style, and she created wonderful traditions and memories for her children and grandchildren to cherish. A kind heart, Diane rescued and adopted pets that she loved and cared for. Diane is survived by her son Scott Mapes and his children Zachary and Taylor, son Todd Mapes and wife Kristy, and their children Madison and Mason. The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her honor to The Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center of Riverside.

Last night heaven gained the most beautiful Angel, my sweet and loving Gramie. You were the light of my life, my biggest supporter, and one of my favorite people in the world. You never missed one of my events, games, or performances and had the absolute heart of gold. You brought sunshine, laughter, and most of all love to everyone's lives and I will miss you more than words could ever say. I am so grateful God chose you to be my Gramie and will never stop telling stories and memories about you. I hope to be half the incredible woman, mother, and grandmother that you are some day to my own kids and teach them the lessons you taught me. You made every holiday so special for us and even though it will never be the same without you, I will always continue the traditions you created because I know how much you loved our family time. My heart is broken without you here already, but I know that you will be with me every day. I am thankful that you are pain free dancing in heaven right now and know that your light will always shine so bright down on us here. I love you today, tomorrow, and forever and always will Gramie.

Three days ago, the world lost the most brilliant shining soul it has to offer. It lost someone who's laugh is like a crashing ocean wave and someone who's heart is like a motorhome on the beach with all family gathered near. My Grammie was an incredible person, she was straight up awesome. She was a grandmother who i know lived her life with no regrets, and is someone who would always go above and beyond for her friends and family. Something i strongly admire about my grammie is how unlimited the amount of love she was able to offer to everyone she knew, she loved her friends and family so so much, and i would even argue that she loved her grandchildren even more. I am still completely shocked as to what occurred over the last few weeks but I already know that wherever you've gone up to now, it is Christmas 24/7, there is plenty of wine, and most importantly there's a warm beautiful beach with a vast sparkling ocean all for you. I love and miss you so so so so so so much, I couldn't have been more lucky to be one of your kiddos. I will always remember everything you have done for me and i yearn for the day I could even be at least half as cool as you were.
Susan Hoyem is with Jill Anderson ... Searl and 3 others. Oct 8, 2023. My friend of a lifetime, Diane Howerton Mapes, lost her battle with stage 4 melanoma, on Friday October 6. Diane was my first friend after moving to Hemet in the 6th grade. She sat in front of me in class with her long ponytail down to her waist. And she befriended me, “the new girl" That was a lucky day for me and we have been in each others lives for 65 yrs. I am heartbroken over her loss. But she will forever be in my heart; and I will see her again The pics below include the 3rd Amiga, Jill Searl. The 3 of us are sisters forever! I love you Diane. IMG_3624.jpeg
