Melvin Joseph Riley Jr.

was born in Hazelwood Missouri, on March 14, 1947. As I recall he came to Hemet when we were in about the fourth grade.  He was a sweet and gentle soul.  He was very shy and I didn't know him very well. He was killed at the early age of 20 in Quang Tin, Vietnam on September 1, 1967.  I believe he was buried in Missouri near the home of Melvin Joseph Riley Sr.--Janie

he  was  a   kind,  hard worker, always worked hard  at  winning, on wrestling  team,  you  could  feel  he was  a  gentle  soul.

I was so suprised to read about Mel.  I was on the wrestling team with him.  He was a very nice, easy to get along with guy.  Lots of energy and a hard worker.  I was very sad to read about his dying in Viet Nam.  My brother and sister also knew him well and liked him very much.

Mel's name appears on the 1st Reconaissance Battalion Memorial at the United States Marine Corps Museum in Triangle, Virginia near Quantico. Mel was one of the Good Guys.
