She is survived by her husband Ed Sanders, children Elizabeth Mall Auterman and spouse Steve and Andrew Mall of Memphis, father- and mother-in-law Oren and Jessie Sanders, and sister-in-law Donna Hayes and spouse Mike. She is also survived by her sister Janet Christine ‘Chrissy’ Norton, her brother Jim Heinz and wife Patty, stepsons Brian and Mark Sanders and nieces and nephews including Andrea ‘Annie’ Taylor, Stacy Orwig and especially Carrie Gaynor. Her beloved dogs Abbie, Cassie and Fritz also survive her, and she is predeceased by Maggie, Lily and Belle, all of whom were a focus of her life.

As a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, the University of Memphis and the University of Tennessee, Barbara retired from nursing after many years at the Memphis Veterans Hospital. Her dogs held a special place in her heart, having shown several in regional AKC tournaments.

As an amateur artist, Barbara had a life-long passion for tending her beautiful flower garden, painting, and jewelry-making. She traveled the world extensively having visited Europe, India, China, Latin America and Africa numerous times throughout her life, including recent safaris to South Africa with her children.

She cared for and brought happiness to the lives of her loved ones and will be greatly missed, having been the source of many joyful experiences and stories.

For our 50th reunion she wrote:

I graduated from Washington University in St.Louis in 1963 and taught English Lit. in Kirkwood H.S., Kirkwood, Missouri for 5 years before moving to Memphis, TN. No, I never met Elvis, but did sit in his favorite booth in a local restaurant. I volunteered in several local charities and learned to play tennis (end result: bad knees). Ultimately, after a divorce in 1977 (remarried in 1984) I went back to the Univ of Tenn and obtained a BSN and MSN in nursing and worked in critical care. I have also been involved in jewelry design. Clearly, I am still trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up. Over the years I have travelled to Mexico, Europe, China, north Africa, east Africa India and Sri Lanka. It's bad case of wanderlust that I haven't gotten over, but I dread those long flights. I retired almost a year ago. Since then I have been working on obedience training with my sweet Afghan Hound, Cassie. We hope to enter competition down the road. She thinks it is her idea and loves to show off. I will be back working at the Memphis Humane Shelter in a month - so many sweet faces!

School Story:

Latin class (do they teach this any more?)Senior honors English, hardest thing I ever did. Tooling around in Trudi's red convertible that summer after graduation. I can't believe we were ever that young! I would love to come back to the reunion, but will have to wait and see. However I would love to hear from anyone. It is nice to know you are out there.
