Ritchey Guild, 72, passed away on Monday, May 9, 2016. Ritchey was the son of George and Beatrice Guild and brother of the late Fredda Lee Guild Haskell.
Ritchey spent the first 19 years of his life growing up in the town of Holliston, Massachusetts. After graduating from high school, Ritchey joined the US Navy and was transferred to naval aviation while in boot camp. He was sent to Aircraft Familiarsation and Avionics School in Memphis, TN. After completing [A-School], Ritchey's first duty station was the Naval Air Facility at Lodges Field in the Azores [The Best]. Later he was transferred to Helicopter squadron HC-2 at Lakehurst, NJ. HC-2 supplied helicopters for air sea search and rescue on Aircraft carriers in the 6th Fleet. Ritchey spent nine months aboard the USS Forrestal CVA-59 supporting HC-2's aircraft and visiting many ports in the Mediterranean.
After serving his country for 4 years and 4 months, Ritchey moved to South Sagamore on Cape Cod. Ritchey was heavily involved in CB Radio and was president of several area CB Clubs. Along with coaching young shooters at the Aptuxet Jr. Rifle Club, Ritchey joined the Sagamore Rifle Club and shot on the pistol team for the Cape Cod Pistol League as well as serving as the league's statistician. Later on, Ritchey devoted 42 years, over half his lifetime, to the Boy Scouts of America; 32 years to Cape Cod and Islands Council and Troop 47 of Sandwich. He served 17 years as Scout Master, and in that time he helped 30 Scouts obtain the Eagle Scout award, the highest rank a boy can earn in scouting. Ritchey spent a number of summers as a Rifle and Archery instructor at the Cape Cod and Islands Council's Camp Greenough in Yarmouthport. Ritchey held an NRA Firearms Instructor Certification.
He and Paul Hanrihan started the council's annual Webelos Turkey Shoot in November 1992, with 128 Webelos participating at the first event. He, along with scouts from Troop 47, manned the range and scored the targets. Along with Paul and Greg Smith, he also manned and scored the Boy Scout Turkey Shoots from 1987 to 2004.
Ritchey held the Amateur Radio call sign KB1EAJ and could be found on the Barnstable Radio Club's repeater, K1PBO 146.950, most of the day. He participated in the Cape & Islands Weather Net every morning at 0600hrs., serving for many years on the rotating net control position. He was a member of ARES [Amateur Radio Emergency Services] and participated in many public service activities requiring radio communications.
Ritchey was a member of the DeWitt-Clinton Masonic Lodge AF & AM in Sandwich. He served 13 years as the Lodge's Tiler. He was also a member of the Valley of Southeastern Massachusetts Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, serving with the makeup team for the degrees.
Ritchey is survived by his niece Brittany and her husband Marshall Lord of Sagamore, and nephew Dane and his wife Rachel Haskell of South Freeport, Maine and a brother-in-law Peter Haskell also of South Freeport.
A memorial service is being planned for Saturday, June 25th at the Church of the Messiah in Woods Hole at 3:00pm.
