When I was in eighth grade, I was asked to show a new classmate around. Tolia and I were best of friends from then on. Like so many friends that have passed away in their youth, I will always remember him as a vibrant artist on the leading edge of music and fun. I think often of Paul and Tolia. I wonder where they would be today.
I met Tolia after his stint in VN. I was with Tolia and Paul in Ithaca early in the evening that they were in the fatal car accident. We were at The Warehouse and were having a good time. We split up as the evening progressed and I did not hear of the accident until several days later. Tolia was...effervescent! A ready smile, a quick wit. He was a fine young man. I believe he fell asleep on the drive home.
A couple years after the accident I was dating a girl who had been in a head on collision. She had been critically injured with a broken back and other severe injuries that keep her hospitalized for several months. Her date was driving the Mustang which Tolia's car hit. A few months into the relationship we were talking about the accident, which she would never do, and I put together and acknowledged the fact that they were my friends in the other car and they had come up to Ithaca to see me that night. She freaked and I never saw her again. She couldn't deal with the connection.
Many years ago, all of my yearbooks were in a fire at my parents home..I was sick about it..A couple of years ago, I was hunting on EBay and ran across a yearbook section under books..To my surprise, there were 2 HHDS yearbooks for sale..One was 1962 & the other was our Senior yearbook, which was rea;;y the one I wanted the most..I quickly paid my $15.00 a piece and waited for them to come in..All the time wondering who would want to get rid of their yearbook? To my surprise, I opened them and they BOTH belonged to Tolia..I knew he had died along with Doc in the car accident but, neber in a million years would have thought they belonged to Tolia..In school, I didn't hang around much with Tolia except in homeroom where we both were in the "S to Z" sections..We did get along but, I hadn't gotten to know him much. But, just going thru his yearbooks, seeing & remembering each of the signatures and each person's entry..helped me to know him better, even tho it was after his passing.. I too, have often wondered what would have become of our Passed Friends..
I just checked for TRoila's brother and found that he just passed away this years. I always like Tolia's family I remember when they would serve home made wine with their meals. I hope Zena still thinks of all his and her friends, I think about them all of the time. My son even knows my history with the Sancharowski's. What a great family, I'm sure that greatness continues with their grandchildren.
