Gwendolyn Louise Bogie Hancock 1948-2021
Gwen Bogie was born on Jan 21, 1948, in Abington Hospital. Her parents were Polly and David G Bogie Sr. Her brother David was 7 years older. They spent their childhood years on James Rd - a nice, residential neighborhood in Hatboro. She attended Meadowbrook Elementary School.
Polly was a wonderful homemaker-sewing, cooking, gardening… and she and Gwen were very close. In the summers and many school vacations, the family would travel south to Maryland to visit Polly’s large extended family there. Sadly, she died when Gwen was 16.
In High School Gwen was involved with intramurals and Spirit committee. She was known for her big smile and sunny outlook, and she had many friends.
Shortly after graduation, she married Tom Post (HH-64), her high school sweetheart. They had two childrenMichael and Tammy, before divorcing several years later.
After her rather painful divorce, she moved down to St Mary’s County, Maryland with the two children. She was tending bar there when she met Joseph (Reggie) Hancock. They were married in 1972. Gwen and Reggie had 4 children together. They were happily married for 40 years when he died of cancer in 2013.
Like her mother, Gwen had a deep love of family heirlooms and the beautiful furniture she grew up with. Although she spent her early years in PA, she was a Marylander at heart.
Gwen loved being a mom, a grandmother and then a great-grandmother. She was an excellent baker, known for her delicious lemon Bundt cake. For many years she created baked goods for the volunteers at her local blood drive. When a granddaughter finished Navy Basic training at Great Lakes (near Chicago), Gwen made her a special cheesecake and they carried it with them in the car for the graduation party. She was also quite a reader…often finishing a book in one day.
She was an avid yard sale enthusiast. If any of her family members needed anything, Gwen was sure to have what they needed in her shed, or she would be on the lookout at the next yard sale.
After the death of her husband, Gwen joined the Methodist church where her daughter Tina was a member. She attended all the membership classes and was baptized. She was quite happy with her new church family.
Her six children lived near her home in Maryland, so all 14 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter were close by.
Tina was with Gwen earlier in 2021 when she had her annual physical and she seemingly passed with flying colors. All reports looked good. In early November, she thought she might have caught the flu, as she was feeling run down. About a week later, she was so weak she agreed to go to the local hospital. Tests showed she had a cardiac blockage and was in need of a bi-pass. They transferred her to Washington (DC) Hospital Center because it was the best place for that kind of surgery. Tragically, before they could perform the procedure, she died there on Nov 19, 2021.
A celebration of life service was held at her Methodist Church in Mechanicsville on Nov 29th . Memorial contributions were requested for the American Red Cross or Mt Zion Methodist Church.
