Lynn Engelking (Sinclair)

 Lynn Marie Engelking Sinclair (1948-2024)

Lynn Engelking was born on April 27, 1948. She was the elder of two daughters of Raymond and Dorothy Engelking of Hatboro. She spent all her school years in the HH school system. In the fall of 1955, at the age of 7, she became a Brownie Scout in Hatboro Troop #85. Apparently, she LOVED the scouting life, as she stayed with Girl Scouts all through high school. Lynn made friends and memories there that she would carry forever, and she learned to love camping. Beyond scouts, in high school, she was involved with Drama and Spirit clubs, and hockey and basketball teams. Our yearbook called her one of our nicest senior girls. After graduation, Lynn attended Allentown Hospital School of Nursing, graduating with a 3-year degree in 1969. She went right to work at Abington Hospital and worked there for about 10 years. On Jan. 5, 1974, she married Wayne Sinclair (a Council Rock graduate). Lynn and Wayne were attending the same church, and several of the church ladies did some matchmaking to get them on the same volunteer committee. They were the parents of 2 children, Andrew born in 1976, and Jennifer born in 1978. The family had a pop-up camper with which they camped up and down the east coast every summer. They typically visited historic sites, but they also got as far south as Disney World one year. Summer also meant a visit to the Jersey Shore. As children, she and her sister, Gail visited Ocean City. For a few years, Lynn and Wayne also took their kids to Ocean City. (Lynn especially loved the coconut macaroons from the boardwalk). Eventually, they moved on to Avalon. Literally, every summer of her life, Lynn went to the ocean. In 1989, after taking several years off to raise her young children, Lynn went back to nursing. She became the school nurse at Longstreth Elementary school in Warminster, where she was dearly loved by students and teachers alike. ...and all along there were the girl scouts. When she wasn’t a leader, she was an advisor. She planned to retire in 2006, but never really left until 2023. She was cited for her 54 years of “active duty” when she finally retired. Over the years, Lynn looked forward to and attended every high school reunion. Sadly, when the 50th rolled around in 2016, she was hospitalized with kidney problems. She suffered with Rheumatoid Arthritis for many years. Besides the debilitating effects of the disease itself (which is auto immune), the medications required to manage the pain and inflammation were quite strong. Early in their marriage, she and Wayne bought a house in Southampton where they lived throughout their marriage. In June 2023, they “downsized” and moved to Southampton Estates, a retirement community with continuing health care. With Lynn’s health problems and Wayne’s diagnosis of the onset of dementia, this move seemed perfect for them. They were very happy there. In January of 2024, the Sinclairs quietly celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Several months later Lynn was looking forward to hosting the kids and grandkids for their first Easter celebration in the new place when she was hospitalized with pneumonia. She passed away on April 6. She was survived by her husband, two children (and their spouses) and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held on April 12, and burial followed at Forest Hills Cemetery in Huntington Valley.

When I was gathering information for this story, Lynn's daughter, Jennifer sent me this cute Girl Scout photo. We were limited in space on the site, so I am sharing it now.

The last photo which Sandy posted was a picture of Lynn in her Girl Scout Round-up uniform. We were part of patrol D-1 from the Philadelphia Council in the summer of 1965. Our patrol was made up of girls from Hatboro, Upper Moreland, and Abington.
