Curtis Dowdy (1982)

I CAN REMEMBER THAT MR. MELVIN WAS A GOOD FRIEND AS WELL AS A GOOD TEACHER. HE WAS MY 6TH GRADE TEACHER AND HE MADE LEARNING FUN.
I ALSO REMEMBER GOING TO HIS HOUSE AND HELPING HIM CLEAN PIDGEON CAGES. HIS HOBBY WAS RAISING PIDGEONS AND HE HAD SOME BEAUTIFUL BIRDS.
IF ANYONE CAN SEND ME A MESSAGE AND TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM, I WOULD APPRECIATE IT VERY MUCH.

Erin Melvin (Condrey) (1994)

Hello Curtis,

My name is Erin Melvin Condrey. Mike Melvin was/is my daddy. He was a great man and died way too early. Dad died in August 2003 due to complications from COPD. He had  a heart attack the May prior and had for some time been diagnosed with diabetes. I can remember when I was little he had problems with his kidneys as well. Dad had stopped teaching and had worked odd and end jobs for a short period of time before he accepted a job working for METRO. He was there for 20+ years and had made a good life for all of us. Now I know that you know that my brother Eric passed too. Well, that had lit a fire within my dad to relocate us out of the neighborhood there and get us out of the city. There was just so much crime over there on Garden St. and he feared for our safety. Eric died when I was 14 years old. He was only 20 years old at the time of his passing. He supposedly drowned in a sand-pit lake that was turned into a living community called Windmill Lakes over off of Almeda Genoa Road. It was hard for my parents and the family. He was so young. Mom is living in Pearland now. I live in Alvin. Elan, my brother, lives in Conroe and I have a little sister, Emberly, that lives in Manvel. I think that I kinda remember you coming over to the house and talking to dad when I was a little girl. Bird talk if I remember correctly. I drove by the old house on Garden and that big bird house/cage is still there in the backyard. I can see it over the fence from the backside of the property. Dad LOVED pigeons and had them until the day he died. He had kinda mellowed in his older age but he was still young at heart. I miss him daily and wish that he had gotten to see my children grow up but God had different plans. I can miss him all I want but it doesn't change a thing. The same with Eric too. Are you going to the reunion? I am trying to get Mom to go and Elan has mentioned about going....I definately want to go. Emberly never technically went to Broadway but Mom jokes and says that she did because Mom was teaching there when she was pregnant with her. Well, I hope that this finds you and yours doing well. You can always email me if you have any questions...I hope that I shed some light on things for you. Take Care and God Bless, Erin Melvin Condrey

Mr. Melvin sure left an imprint on me. He was such a fun teacher. We could always get him started talking about Elvis or pigeons! He could kick a kick ball the farthest I have ever seen. He was a guy that loved kids and it showed. All of us loved Mr. Melvin's class. He was my 6th grade teacher also and sure gave me alot of great memories.

I first knew Mr. Melvin as "Bro. Melvin".  He was my Sunday School Teacher at Pine Valley Baptist Church in Houston.  He definitely loved the Lord & the kids he taught!

When I first started school at BBS, the school thought I should be held back a year.  I previously went to an ACE school (work at your own pace), and they thought I wasn't ready for 6th grade.  Mr. Melvin thought otherwise, and said, "YES, she is ready!" So that was the start of my journey at BBS ~ Thank you Mr. Melvin for believing in me!

I also have fond memories of Tammy Naylor & Francine Guajardo showing this new kid (me) the ropes, and Mr. Melvin tugging on Tammy's pony tails :)

He was a great teacher & friend ~ He is loved & missed by all!!

Erin ~ What a heritage you have!  God bless your beautiful family!

Sincerely,

Kim Lambert Holmes
