Left Broadway after the 79-80 school year to teach science and coach at Galena Park Middle School for 19 years. Shortly after arriving at GPMS I ran a couple of marathons with Coach Ray Stanfield. Left GPMS in a complete career switch in 1999 to go to North Shore Senior High to teach kids how to repair computers ... have been there for 11 years now. Was able to coach my own daughter, Stacey in AAU baskeball and select team softball. Stacey was an ambidexterous point guard for North Shore Middle School but concentrated solely on softball during her high school years at N.S. She started or played in every game during her four years there. Stacey is now about to graduate from the University of Texas with a degree in Biology and is preparing to take her MCAT examination for entrance into medical school. Upon Stacey leaving for college and being an empty nester, I enrolled in culinary school for night classes at the Houston Culinary Institute and recently graduated last December. Enjoy the heck out of doing barbecue cookoffs and was the Texas State Champion in the turkey breast competion last November at the Texas State BBQ Championship Cookoff in Alice, Texas near Corpus Christi.

For years after I left Broadway I would always check the sports pages on Wednesday and Saturday mornings to see how the Bobcats faired the night before during basketball season. I had the privilege of knowing some very outstanding and dedicated administrators and teachers at Broadway Baptist. All of whom loved and cared for each and every student there.

School Story:

During the summer of 1979 Rene Hancock, the A.D. & head football coach at St. Pius, called me asking for Broadway to play them in basketball the upcoming season. I remember telling him "no way", but he informed me that since the game would have to be early in the basketball season that all of his star football players would still be in the football playoffs thus they would not be on the basketball team yet. Coach Hancock assured me that they had a really strong football team and that they would go deep into the playoffs since they had their big-named quarterback Gary Kubiak on fire setting all kinds of passing records for St. Pius. With the thought of being able to play against a weakened Pius basketball team void of the football players I agreed for us to play them.
As fate would have it, St. Pius lost for the first time in ages during either the first or second round of the football playoffs. Who played point guard for the St. Pius Panthers against us - none other than Gary Kubiak the head coach of the Houston Texans!

During the 1980 school year Coach Ray Stanfield was the boys' head basketball coach and also the girls' volleyball coach. He had a volleyball manager by the name of William Loftin. Coach Stanfield had told William to go and set up the volleyball poles and nets for the game we were going to have later that day. William was having a difficult time getting one of the ropes untangled and went to Coach and asked if he carried a knife, and if so, could he use it. Coach Stanfied responded with "I don't need a knife because I can take on any man with my bare hands!". William, in a deadpan, sarcastic voice responded with "Coach, why don't you bring your hands on over here and cut this rope" All of us roared in laughter!
