School Story:

I was always the guy in the corner watching and was usually the one who was willing to except alternative life styles. Started surfing at 16 and left all the sports, band, and other school related stuff in the past. After all, would you rather be at two a days in the middle of summer, or at the beach with simi-naked women running amuck.....
I guess my favorite story from back when was reminded to me by Frank recently. Several of us skipped school and went surfing, (what a suprise), and we got back to Sam Houston right at 3:00 as school was letting out. We were in Jimmy Williams old ford van and making our covert approach up the side street across from campus. Jimmy had a real Knack for encouraging bad behavior and many times while cruising Surfside, different victims would swing out on the passenger door and act like they were falling out to draw attention from all the little beach babes. I always scolded them about that door falling off someday and how they would get hurt. Well this afternoon with the street full of students escaping from the hell we knew as Wilbanks World, Jimmy talked me into the "falling out the door" routine. You guessed it, the door fell off and much to my amazement, I was able to run with it for about 20 feet before I hit a full garbage can on the side of the road, endowed, and ended up in the bottom of the ditch with garbage all over me. Yeah, a real low profile moment.... The worst part was when I went to school the next day with my fake note, Wilbanks just looked at me and showed me the view from his window overlooking the side street. I didn't say a word, took my three swats and wrote it up as another fine mess Jimmy and the crew had gotten me into...

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you might get what you need....

Famous or interesting people you've met?

I know Robert August, (dark haired surfer in original Endless Summer movie) and partied with him and several Astros at his birthday parties in Houston. His son used to be a pitcher for the Stros. Got lost on Willie Nelson's bus a couple of times, wink, wink, after a concert in Wimberley and before one in Helotes. Rode around San Antonio with Peter Max on bikes sometimes in 1971. Had lunch with Robert Duvall in Lulings best barbeque joint, real nice guy. Did land surveys for several of the San Antonio Spurs.

Ever been on TV? Tell us all about it.

While living in Guam in 1983 around Christmas, I was surfing some winter waves that were double overhead. A news team came and took video of the large surf and then started using it as part of the intro for their nightly news which was always fun to watch. Lucky for me that was a good session and I didn't look like a kook...

Married three times, first when I was 18, mannaged to last five years. Second, was immediately after the divorce, lasted 29 years. Lived in Galveston till last September when the storm blew my world to pieces. I got married to a beauty from San Francisco who moved here to Montana on Christmas Eve of 2009. I have a home here in Red Lodge where we have chickens, ducks, horses, and volunteer as a foster home for shelter dogs. Surfing and Snowboarding keep my body in shape and my mind and soul young.
