      Lea Conner
        1950-2023

Lea Anita Conner, age 73, was born March 7, 1950. and passed away July 20, 2023. Lea passed away peacefully, surrounded by her mother (Theda), children and N. Fred Crowder, her best friend.

A life-long Houstonian, Lea graduated from both Rice University and the University of Houston School of Law.  During her time as an undergraduate, she proudly marched in the “Marching Owl Band.”  Following a brief period teaching high school, her lengthy legal career focused on benefits and pensions, and she would retire from Exxon.  After her retirement, she continued to be active in retiree benefit education.

Lea and Fred were married in 1980 (divorced 2006) and shared two children, David and Megan.  As an involved mother, she contributed greatly to Annunciation Orthodox School, serving on the school board, and helping with the A.O.S. Olympics. She followed both children to youth activities and sporting competitions; she refused to just watch and was always involved in some fashion. She also accepted a host of her children’s friends into her “family,” and the house was always open. Though her strong personality and opinions were not always welcome, she always meant the best and cared for her family and community greatly.  Her grandchildren brought her great joy. She enjoyed attending their sports games and school events and would brag on them to anyone.

Lea loved travel and Elvis, almost as much as her family.  She made trips to see her friend Randy re-create Elvis concerts and even attended an Elvis themed cruise.  She always looked forward to whale watching in Hawaii and her next adventure in Europe with Fred.  Locally she enjoyed spending time with her dear friends Mary and Kelly Goodman at Lake Livingston.

Lea was involved in an unfortunate accident in November of 2022.  After surviving against the odds, she fought hard to return to normal life.  She lost her fight with a lengthy list of medical conditions and has joined her father, George, in heaven.

Lea is survived by David and Jenny Crowder (Georgia and Briggs), Megan and Gavin Eastep (Wyatt, Allie, and Sawyer), Fred Crowder, Theda Conner, Mike (brother) and Marci Conner and many extended relatives and friends.

The family appreciates all those who were involved in her care.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Friday, the 4th of August of 2023, with light snacks to follow in the parish hall.  In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the charity of your choosing.

Her care has been entrusted to Claire Brothers Funeral Home, Houston, Texas 77081.

Lea was a sweetheart! Strong-minded, yes, but some of us truly enjoyed that about her! My favorite Lea memory: In the fall semester of 1967, many of us were in English class together, taught by Doris Franz. Lea was also Ms. Franz's student aide. We concocted a plan to prank Ms. Franz for Halloween by secretly adorning her lawn with humorous posters based on our classical literature assignments. Just after we had put the posters in the lawn, we saw a light come on in Ms. Franz's house, and a person emerged. Of course, we fled. The next day, Lea told our co-conspirators that Ms. Franz had asked her for our names(!) and Lea needed to know if she could tell -- not to punish us, but to award us extra credit! And Ms. Franz had emerged from her house the previous night, not to catch us, but to make sure other neighborhood kids didn't destroy our posters!
