Obituary:

Susan Alice Heitshusen, 80, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 27, 2022, surrounded by family.

Susan was born on January 11, 1942 in Port Arthur, Texas, to Haltom Frederick Smith and Helen Forester Smith. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1959 and went on to earn a degree in Secondary Education from Lamar University in Beaumont, TX. After graduation, Susan married Garth Brian Heitshusen on June 2, 1962, and the two settled in Houston, TX.

Susan began a career as a high school math teacher in 1962, first at Spring Branch High School and later at Spring Woods High School, where she retired in 1999. During her career, she took a hiatus from teaching to raise her two children. She dedicated herself to volunteering at church, in the PTA, and in the many activities in which her children were involved. She was a loving and caring daughter, wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend.


Susan is survived by her husband, Garth Heitshusen, her son, Brian Heitshusen, her daughter, Janna Kintzley, son-in-law Keith Kintzley, and three granddaughters, Greta, Izzy, and Claire Kintzley. She is also survived by her two sisters, Carol Bryant and Sally Spell and brother, Dan Smith. She is preceded in death by her parents, Haltom and Helen Smith.

A memorial service is scheduled for October 1, 2022 at 11:00 am at Spring Branch Presbyterian Church, 1215 Campbell Road, Houston, TX.
