I was not a close friend of Johnny, however I do remember the shock of this incident. We will always remember what Johnny and his family sacrificed for the safety of our community.

I grew up next door to Johnny on Woodcrest. He was the big brother I never had and the first boy to ask me to marry him. We were 8 years old at the time. Mickey and Roy, his parents were unofficial relatives and I have Mickey's mother's crystal bowl in a place of honor in my home. I still have Johnny's ID bracelet in my jewelry box. He was my best neighborhood buddy for the first 15 years of my life. I think about him every time I pass a policeman and every chance I get, I thank them in his behalf, for their service. He was a good friend, a treasured son, a tough marine (2 tours of duty in Vietnam) and an honorable policeman. I still love you, Johnny.
Thursday, January 30, 1975 is a day I will never forget. A brother police officer and a fellow Class of '65 member, Johnny Bamsch, was gunned down by a seventeen year old kid when Johnny interrupted a 7/11 store robbery. Instead of shooting the robbery suspect as he backed out of the store, Johnny gave him the opportunity to drop his gun and surrender. The young hijacker wasted no time firing a lucky shot which entered above Johnny's bullet proof vest and found its way to his heart.
Johnny died as he lived, a true Amercian hero who served two tours in Vietnam with the United States Marine Corps and as a fearless police officer protecting the citizens of Houston.
As is so tragically common in police officers deaths, he left behind his young wife, Cindy, also a member of the Class of '65, who was expecting their first child, Mandy, who knows her father only by what she is told by all who knew and loved him.
God bless you, Johnny and may God bless Cindy and Mandy.
Johnny and I sat next to each other in all of our German classes...I had been given the German name Gertrude, and he Hans. Forevermore we were Hans and Gertrude in all of our meetings. He was a good friend and always made me laugh. We miss you Johnny.
