In Memory

Melvin Hendricks - Class Of 1963

The following obituary and eulogy for Mr. Melvin Hendricks has been provided by his sister-in-law and Westbury High School classmate Mrs. Olivia Hooks Wagner.

Mr. Melvin Hendricks (Class of 1963)

Our classmate and my sister's husband, Melvin Hendricks, passed from our lives on December 20, 2001, at the age of 57. He died of a heart attack in his home town of San Antonio, TX.

Mr. Hendricks is survived by his wife and love of his life, Martha Alice Hooks Hendricks (WHS 1963), son, Scott Hendricks, daughter, Allison Hendricks Hall, and sister in law, Olivia Hooks Wagner (WHS 1965).

Mel and Martha met their Jr. year in Homeroom at Westbury High School. They were married August 7, 1965. Mel served his country in the United States Navy. San Diego, Oakland, and Beeville, Tx. became home away from home during the next four years. Mel spent nine months of his last year in the Navy at the US Naval Station Sangley Point.

Mel was so proud to see his son, Scott, emerge as one of today's most versatile barritones. Scott is an alumnus of Houston Grand Opera. Mel was equally proud of his daughter, Allison, who worked along side her dad in the family business. Mel was a country boy from Winnsborough, Tx. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, Houston Astros, Dallas Cowboys, music, and most of all being with his family.

Mr. Hendricks has also been a part of my family as the husband and brother-in-law of, respectively, Martha Ann Hendricks and Olivia Hooks Wagner, who are my cousins.

Thank you for your service to our country, Mr. Hendricks. Rest in peace, and with my condolenses to your family.

Nice eulogy - it told me more than I ever knew about him. How fortunate that he married the love of his life. I feel badly for his early departure, but from what I read it sounds like his life was a happy one.
