In Memory

G. Robert (Bob) Brammer

GEORGE ROBERT "BOB" BRAMMER, 74, of Huntington, West Virginia, passed away on June 26, 2015 at Michael's Bay, Ontario, Canada. He was born in Huntington on February 22, 1941, the son of the late William Oliver Brammer and Hazel Virginia Bing Brammer. He is survived by his fiancée, Mary Harvey Wilson Midkiff; son, Beau Robert Brammer; and two brothers, William G. Brammer and Charles David Brammer. Bob graduated from Huntington High School in 1959 and Marshall University in 1965 majoring in Chemistry. At Marshall, he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He started working at the International Nickel Company (INCO) in 1962 as a student chemist while attending Marshall full time. He married Connie Sue Pelfrey in 1964. After graduation from Marshall, Bob continued to work at INCO until 1967 when he accepted a position at J & L Steel in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania where he ultimately was promoted to chief chemist in 1973. With his analytical chemistry skills gained by education and work experience, Bob started his own company in 1968 as a side business. The new company produced items to be used in industry to calibrate analytical equipment such as X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometers and spark optical emission spectrometers. By 1975, the new business venture was doing so well Bob quit his job at J & L Steel to further develop the Brammer Standard Company. His son, Beau Robert Brammer was born in 1972 while they lived in Pennsylvania. In 1977, Bob and family moved to Houston, Texas, as the business expanded. Starting with just seven items in 1968, the company now produces more than 11,000 items and distributes its Certified Reference Materials worldwide. Bob traveled to England, France, Germany, Japan and China marketing the company. He became an active member in the American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) in 1966 and was a subcommittee chairman for over 30 years. Because of his strong leadership, ASTM presented Bob several awards including the Award of Merit, which has an accompanying honorary title of Fellow of the Society. After Connie's death, Bob married Sylvia Max. In 2000, they bought a summer home on Manitoulin Island in Ontario, Canada, and enjoyed many summers there with family and friends. The couple placed importance on the Marshall University family and established the Connie Sue Pelfrey Memorial Scholarship for secondary education students. Bob also established the Brammer Brothers Chemistry Scholarship for juniors and seniors and the G. Robert and Sylvia Brammer Scholarship to the Society of Yeager Scholars. The Yeager Scholars class of 2008 was named in his honor. He was very active in the Marshall University Alumni Association. While still living in Houston, Bob helped organize the Marshall University Houston Alumni and Friends Club and for this he was presented the Distinguished Service Award. His wife, Sylvia, died in 2011, after which Bob moved back to Huntington leaving the business to his son. Huntington and West Virginia always remained a special place for Bob. With his return, it afforded him the opportunity to further engage with Marshall through the University's Foundation and to increase his activity with the Yeager's Board of Directors. Bob had profound pride and admiration for the students associated with the Yeager's program. Bob was an active member of the Huntington Rotary Club and truly cherished the camaraderie amongst his tennis and lunch group friends. Bob was a passionate photographer and fisherman. His Manitoulin relationships were never far from his mind and the family wishes to extend sincere gratitude to the friends and authorities on the Island this past week – your help and kindness will always be remembered. The last few years Bob and Mary Harvey spent wonderful times traveling, gardening and walking dogs including his beloved Georgie who never left his side. He was loved and admired by Mary Harvey's family of children and grandchildren who referred to him as GrandBob. He leaves behind many people who will greatly miss his kindness, generosity, and his ever-present smile – he was truly a humble man. A memorial service will be held at the Fifth Avenue Baptist Church in Huntington at 11 a.m. on July 6, with visitation starting at 10 a.m. If you would wish, contributions may be made to the Marshall University Society for Yeager Scholars, One John Marshall Drive, Huntington, WV 25755.The family has prepared a video depicting Bob's life and you may view it by clicking the link shown here:

Growing up with Bobby in the West End of Huntington brings back many memories.  I can still see him sitting on the steps of the home where I lived.  He always seemed to be around.  In school, he sat behind me in a couple of classes.  He was always making some comment that that could only be heard by me.  He never seemed to get caught.  For some unkown reason, you have a friend that you keep in your heart forever, and Bobby is one of mine.  My sympathy to David, Greg and family. Bob was a classmate and a friend. He will be missed by all of us. May his family be blessed with strength and may Bob rest in peace and my thought and prayers go out to the family and Mary Harvey who was part of the family.

What a full life my elementary school friend led after we both went our separate ways from Marshall.  And what an expansive circle of friends and family he gathered around him, sharing his humor and his kindness. May all of them revel in their memories of him, laughing and weeping, and happy and grateful to have had him in their lives, even as we mourn his leaving. To the friends and family--those I've known and those whom I've never met-- know that Bobby is remembered fondly, and that I grieve with and for you.

I have known Bob since our days at West Junior High.  I have always had the highest regard for the Brammer family.  My condolances and thoughts to David and Greg(although I remember Greg but did not know him well).  Bob certainly distinguished himself in his various fields and gave back much to everyone.  Our class was unusual in its achievements and Bob was no esception.  It is hard to believe we have lost so many of our class just in the last 2 years.   Jim Efaw
