Sidney Larry Owens Sr.

January 31, 1943 to September 17, 2023

Sidney Larry "Bugs" Owens Sr. [80] of Huntsville AL. Passed away September 17, 2023. Larry was predeceased by his father Herman Lee "Humpy" Owens, mother Sadie Faye Owens, his 4 brothers Thomas Owens, Paul "Poochie" Owens, Hugh D. "Dickie" Owens, Calvin Clayton Owens, and his sister Margaret Owens Ashley. Larry is survived by his wife Barbara Owens whom he shared his life with for over 40 years. He has 2 sons Sidney Larry Owens Jr. and Steven Owens. There are 4 grandchildren Dylan, Thomas, Emily and James Owens. He has several nephews, sister in laws and brother in laws.

Larry was a great athlete especially in baseball. He was chosen to play against the King and his court at Optimus Park. He let the 1st pitch go by and said "Is that all you got?" and then the King pitched to him from second base and struck him out. It showed he had confidence and humility, when the story was told. He had a chance to try out with the Philadelphia Phillies. He had a bus ticket to Mobile AL and a box lunch. He chose to stay here to see the birth of his 1st child. He is a great and loving father. My dad spread his love and talent in baseball to so many young men in the Oak Park area by coaching, mentoring, and teaching sportsmanship. He was such a great coach, Oak Park had to rewrite the rule book. He was the best at giving his players nicknames.

Larry and his brother owned a business together. It was named Owens Barber Shop on Andrew Jackson Way. He was a successful insurance agent. He later found his home at Glenn's Florist. The owners, Glenn and Sydney, were his work family. We are lucky to have known Larry, be his wife, son, brother, sister, family and most of all his friend. You will be loved and missed by everyone. Our memories of Larry Owens will be with us forever!

A visitation for Sidney will be held Saturday, September 23, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Valhalla Funeral Home, 698 Winchester Rd Ne, Huntsville, Alabama 35811. Larry Dennis Owens

Bugs was a great guy and always lots of fun to be around. I met him on the first day of 7th grade at Rison Jr. High and both of us were unbelieving when we learned we had the same name. After confirming this was true, we became friends and enjoyed playing baseball on Coach Myhand's teams. Bugs was a great player who always managed to get a hit or a walk. He had a keen mind for the game as evidenced by his invitation to tryout for the majors.

He was a sucessful businessman and applied himself to whatever he undertook. He will be missed by frieds and famliy but leaves a legacy of great memories for those of use fortunate to know him.
