Janice Donaldson Parler, 51, passed away Wednesday at her home in Charlotte, N.C., following a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer. Born April 16, 1957, in Huntsville to Ray and Alene Donaldson, Jan was a 1975 graduate of Huntsville High School. She attended Auburn University, graduating in 1980 with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering. In 2006, Jan received her master of divinity degree from Union PSCE at Charlotte.
In addition to her parents, Jan is survived by her devoted husband, Richard Jennings Parler; three sons, Samuel Jennings Parler, Robert Clay Parler, and Graham Reid Parler; a brother, Randy Donaldson and wife Suzie of Atlanta; a sister, Patsy and husband John Evans of Atlanta; and several nieces and nephews.
A woman of strength and grace, Jan will best be remembered for her humor, honesty, compassion, and commitment to service. Her love of her children, her church, gardening, music, and home decorating endeared her to those she knew as family.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate Jan's life in a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Avondale Presbyterian Church, Charlotte. Dr. John B. Earl will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the ceremony.
