Glancye Walls Gray, 90, of Madison County died Tuesday, July 27, 2004. Mrs. Gray was a life long resident of Madison County. She was a teacher and guidance counselor at Huntsville High School.
Formerly, she was a teacher at both New Market and Buckhorn High Schools. A graduate of Huntingdon College, she was president of the student body and a member of several honorary societies. She earned a master's degree from the University of Alabama.
Always active in the church she served in many areas, such as, Sunday school teacher, choir member, elder in the New Market Presbyterian Church and member and moderator of Presbyterian Women. She was state president of the Alabama Home Demonstration Clubs in the 1950s and selected as Woman of the Year in 1956. She was a member of the Twickenham Study Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Aladdin Club, and the Retired Teachers Association, among others.
Mrs. Gray was preceded in death by her husbands, Howard Gray who died in 1943, and Fred Orman. Survivors include one son, William Howard Gray and his wife, Mary, of New Market; two daughters, Janel Bates and her husband, Ed, and Sandra Vallely and her husband, Pat, of Huntsville; one sister, Katie Laws of Houston; seven grandchildren, Edwin Bates III, William Bates, Michael Vallely, Gray Vallely and his wife, Chantelle, Angie Vallely Servick and her husband, Danny, William Gray and his wife, Ashley, and Julia Gray Doster and her husband, Walton; and five great-grandchildren, Ansley Vallely, Kate Vallely, Elizabeth Reid Gray, Walton Gray Doster and Sam Servick.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m today at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at the New Market Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Bradley Hall and Dr. William Cockrill officiating. Burial will be at Taylor Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the New Market Presbyterian Church, P.O.
