In Memory

Todd Wagner

Todd Wagner was born April 28, 1971.  Todd died December 1, 1988, after spending 32 days in Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, at the age of 17.  Todd was active in baseball his entire life.  He played catcher and was known for his powerful swing.  He was also active in wrestling his junior year of high school.  From fifth grade to ninth grade, Todd played football.  Then because of a back injury, Todd sat out his junior year; however, was on the varsity football team at the time of his death.

In trying to prove to my (6) year old son that, at one time, I actually was an athlete, I had to open up my tote full of HHS "memorabilia" for proof.

I began to page through our old year books, pictures, and letters. It was in here, that I found, and re-read (3) letters that Todd had written to me while he was fighting his addiction. After reading them, I sat there for several minutes just thinking about him.

Todd and I had been friends since elementary school. We lived just a few blocks from each other, and we spent plenty of time together as kids. We had a lot of fun. And as we got older, we also got into plenty of trouble together!

I think about Todd often. Whether it's an old football clip of Brian Bosworth (Sooners)on TV, or "East Bound and Down" on the radio. There are triggers that will always bring back fond memories of Todd Wagner.

Your friend,
Derek DeJean
