In Memory

Marcia McGraw (Herr)

Another of our classmates has passed away too soon.  Marcia McGraw-Herr,71, of Gilbert,AZ., formerly of Indianola,Ia,  passed away on March 30,2022, at home with her family present.  Marcia was born January 20,1951, in Indianola and was the daughter of Verlyn and Betty McGraw.

Marcia spent her entire formative years in Indianola Schools beginning at Irving Elementary in Mrs. Downing's kindergarten class and graduated from IHS with our wonderful class 1969.  She will be remembered as having a fun if somewhat daring spirit!!  Many miles were put on her bike riding all over Indianola and later in her car going round and round the square!  Many hours spend at the Corner Sundry, Seilers Bakery, Shannon Cafe, Dairy Queen and the A&W!!  How lucky was she (and all of us) to grow up in town where we felt safe and protected.  Lifelong friendships were formed and nurtured that remain now.  Marcia received her Elementary Education degree at Simpson College where she met the love of her life...Dave Herr.  Following marriage, Marcia enjoyed a lifetime of teaching young students, started in Bellevue,Ia., and continuing at MelcherDallas and ending her career in Gilbert,Az.  Her love for life and laughter spilled over into the classroom and she kept in contact with many students as they grew into adults. The marriage between Marcia and Dave produced two wonderful children, Abbey and Tyler, who live close by in AZ. with their families.  Marcia's 4 grandkids were the love of her life and constant reminders of the importance of family.

She will be surely be missed!!!

I remember Marcia as a fun loving girl in Indianola high school. We got to know each other later when my Dad worked for her Dad at Warren County DX. RIP Marcia, you will be missed.

Rest peacefully, Marcia. How lucky was I to be friends since Kindergarten and even through all the years and to even have our kids all be friends and then even our grandkids play together!

I have so many fun memories of growing up together - and as I told you last week - some will not be shared with your kids and grandkids! 😉💜🦋 Diane

Marcia and I were distant cousins, classmates, and friends.  She and Dave introduced Al and I.  Over the years we have shared so many great times.  Marcia always loved to laugh and that always was Al's goal to make her laugh!  Our biggest adventure was hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon when we where 60!  It was so much fun to do this with Marcia, Dave, and their daughter Abbey and so many laughs but not sure our bodies thought it was funny!  We will treasure all the wonderful memories!  Peace and comfort for all!  Merron and Al

I met Marcia, about this time of year, on the Irving Grade School jungle gym, as a new 2nd grade (Mrs.Lotz) transfer student from across the state.  I stepped on her hand, which made her holler, and she then asked my name.....we sufferedwhile performing in sweet Mrs.Williams' annual piano concerts-for a short time, played intramural basketball on Sat.mornings,  were band geeks, and years  after high school, ran into each other at a mutual friend's barbecue, where she had young David in tow.  He and I had played our saxes in the Simpson College Band together, and I was so happy they had found one another.  I sold them their first home that they helped the contractor, Bill Laird, build. He always claimed that they were the best help he ever had......Dave, and Family, we mourn for your loss.  You two led an exciting travel life!
