2015 LEAGUE CHAMPIONS!!
The St. Paul Blvd. Fire Department team won the Monroe County Firemen’s Slow Pitch Softball league championship for 2015. It was an improbable championship to say the least. St Paul started the season with 1 win and 4 losses in their first 5 games of the season. They finished the season by winning 9 of their last 10 games, including going 5 wins and 0 losses in the playoffs.
Sixth seeded St Paul defeated the North Greece FD, the Hilton FD, and the 3 time defending league champion Greece Ridge FD/Greece Police combined team to reach the finals against a fellow Irondequoit department, the Laurelton FD. Fourth seeded Laurelton defeated the Chili FD and then the regular season champs the Point Pleasant FD to reach the finals against St Paul in a best of 3 format.
St Paul defeated Laurelton at McAvoy Park on Thursday, August 13th, by a score of 21 to 8 to take a 1 to 0 lead in the series. The teams played again on Thursday, August 20th at the St Paul Exempts field. In what can only be described as a game for the ages, the 2 teams played to a 27 to 27 tie after 7 innings. The game was then suspended due to darkness at that point. The teams resumed the game on Tuesday, August 25th at the St Paul Exempts field. Laurelton was held scoreless in the top of the 8th inning. St Paul came to bat in the bottom of the eighth and scored the game winning run to win by a score of 28 to 27!
The championship is St Paul’s first since the 1988 season when St Paul, interestingly enough, also defeated Laurelton. The only players remaining from that 1988 season are Paul Groat, Gary Sanflippo, and Billy Netchke from the Laurelton FD and Brud Harvey, Chris Harvey, Johnny Oldenburg and Jim Shafer from the St Paul FD.
