Coach Stan Cason

Stanley Ray Cason of Irving, Texas
October 23, 1942 - July 2, 2020

Stanley Ray Cason of Irving Texas passed away July 2, 2020 at the age of 77 years.

Stan was born October 23, 1942, in Haworth, Oklahoma.  He was raised in Idabel, Oklahoma, where he attended school and graduated from Idabel High School.  He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Southeastern University in Durant, Oklahoma, in 1964

He worked for station KBEL in Idabel as a popular disk jockey. Stan moved to Irving in 1965 and coached PE at Irving High School, before transferring to Crockett Middle School as a football coach and PE teacher in 1969. In 1972, he moved to Lamar Middle School to coach PE before switching to Good Elementary School where he retired as a PE teacher 20 years later in 1996.

For more than 45 years, the voice of Stan Cason reverberated across Irving Schools Stadium, later renamed Joy & Ralph Ellis Stadium, as he served as the voice of Irving ISD athletics. Cason was hired as the stadium’s public address announcer in 1966, and throughout his career, he announced hundreds of varsity football games, varsity baseball games and Airlane Relays varsity track meets.

Stan was inducted to the Irving School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019.

Stan loved his son Gregory Todd and they spent many happy hours watching OU football and sharing their love of music.  Stan and Susan were married in 1995 and made their home in Irving, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents George and Juanita (Mitchell) Cason; his sister Muriel Jean Thomas, brother Larry Joe Cason and his son Greg.

His surviving family includes his wife Susan and Aunt JoAnn Mitchell, niece Cathy Agee and her husband Brett, several cousins and their families.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 23, 2020 at Donnelly's Colonial Funeral Home Chapel, 606 West Airport Freeway in Irving.  The service will be live-streamed.  The link to view the service live or at a later time will be posted on this obituary by 1:00 p.m. on the day of the service.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation to the First Baptist Church of Irving.

I greatly admired Coach Cason at IHS.  He was very well liked and seemed more of a friend than a Coach, young, energetic and always treated every kid with respect.  I thought he was much older than we were back then but now find that the difference was only ten years.  Great young man when I knew him...
