Elizabeth Byrd (Bramlett)

Anna sat next to me in Chemistry class our senior year at BK and we were good friends, but we didn't keep up with each other after graduation.  I assumed she would have gone to college because she had talked about it and I knew she had applied to one of the Catholic colleges.

In the summer of 1972 I had a temporary job working for the Army Corps of Engineers located in the Federal building in downtown Jacksonville.   It turned out that Anna worked in that same building for the Federal employees credit union.  Her desk was right by the front door of their office and everyone in the entire building knew her.  As for me, it was great to see her again and have an "old" friend to hang out with during breaks and at lunchtime.

I remember talking to Anna that summer about going to college.  She was so intelligent, it just seemed like a waste for her not to go, but she was adamant that she wasn't interested.  She seemed happy enough with her life, she liked her job, and she had a lot of friends.  Her older sister, Marsha, was working at Prudential and they both were living at home with their parents.

One day toward the end of the summer, I arrived for work and my co-workers gathered around me.   They asked me if I knew about what had happened to my friend, Anna.  I didn't know.  They told me as much as they could about the car collision, and that Anna and her sister had both died.

I have never stopped thinking about Anna.  I've known many people who have died, as we all have, but her death is still the most tragic for me because she was so young and beautiful and full of life.  Yet, I had that time with her in the summer of '72, and I've always been grateful for that.

Anna's death impacted me so strongly. I know the exact location where the impact occurred and travel by it very often. Each time I do, I think of her beautiful ginger red hair, her smile and her eyes. She was such a peaceful soul.
