Ok...this is Ms. Casey's 4th Grade Class at San Jose Elementary. I'm not sure of everyone but will give you what I think so far. First row...front of picture. Bob Reams ? Nancy Osgood ? Great start for us Mary Jo! Who else knows who some of these fine looking youngsters are? Who's on either side of you Mike? Who's on your row Gayle? Who's sitting with you Mr. Hinely?
My heartfelt thanks to all of you on the Reunion Committee for this amazing website and for your hard work, time and commitment that will bring all of us a weekend to remember! By the way Chris Parker...you are so right about the "good lookin grannies!" Who-Wee! I have been motivated to step up my water intake and eye cream usage! Sure does look like alot of well maintained women here. I agree with a dear friend who said, "I can't believe that I have a son who's almost 40 because I still can't believe that I'm not almost 40!" Well, she is right and I can't believe that I'm 57 and my husband is 60! Where did the years go?! Blessings to all and see you soon! ~Fox~
P.S. I would appreciate prayers for our USMC son Jonathan. He lost control of his R/6 Yamaha "crotch rocket" motorcycle last Sunday in Riverside, CA and has an unset broken arm, all over body road rash wounds, and some head trauma. He is on a 7 day convalescence leave and is having a MRI on May 1st and then will have a hard cast put on his arm May 5. He seems to be doing OK under the circumstances.
Oh wow! I just saw the pictures. The seventh grade picture is in Mrs. Sellars room. Poor old Mrs. Sellars. She used to cry all the time!! She also used to sit in her rocking chair and eat crackers all day because of an ulcer (probably caused by us!!). Someone poured perfume on the old radiator in her room so we could get out of class - and it worked. It was sickening sweet! Anybody else remember that or remember who did it?? :) I also remember sitting in her room when they announced that President Kennedy had been shot, and we were all sent home early. That's Cherie Trescot in the first row - second seat - with Tommy behind her, right? Jean O'Brien in the second row, and Mary Jo Linville in the third ?? Is that Gladney behind Mary Jo? This is fun trying to guess, but I wish I knew where my class pics were so I could cheat!! And in the San Jose pic, isn't that Bob Reams in the front row? That's me in the middle of the third row with the awful short haircut, and Janet Lindsay in front of me (she moved away - sad because she and Janet Martling and I grew up together.) Second row is Laurie Chisholm, Gaylen ?, and Mike Ferguson, I think. Great memories - thanks to whoever sent these in.
Thanks so much to everyone for their hard work on this website. It has been great to read about everyone and look at all of the pictures. I remember Mrs. Sellers very well and I remember the perfume on the heater. She always wore those long skirts that practically dragged the ground. I was in Mrs. Mitchells math class when the announcement was made about President Kennedy. I had hoped to come to the reunion and kept trying to work it out, but I just can't make it happen. My youngest daughter is graduating from Georgia Southern and leaving a few days later for a mission trip to Kenya and I can't manage all of this in one week. I hope everyone has a wonderful time at the reunion and thanks again for putting all of this together.
I too remember those days at South Jax and also Mrs. Sellers. I remember her rocking chair and the perfume on the radiator also, just don't remember who did it or even if it was ever announced who was responsible. One other thing I remember about Mrs. Sellers was that a lot of the kids called her "Olive Oil" and that when she walked around the room, she walked sideways.
I was in English class when the announcement about President Kennedy came over the loud speaker (can't remember the teachers name). I was next in line to recite in front of the class, I believe The Gettysburg Address?", not real sure, and when the announcement came across the loud speaker, the room went silent. I was never called on and to my great luck at the time, never was called on (good thing too because I had not memorized it).
I did not start attending the southside schools until 6th grade and I too have been looking for my class pictures. But, in this one, I believe the person just in front of Mrs. Sellers is Jan Ragsdale and I think just behind her is Gail Shad? Those are the only two I realy recognize but if I had my picture I probably could tell better. Since I was not real popular during my year at South Jax, I don't really remember any of the boys except for one (don't think he was in this class) and his name was Reggie Smith.
I have really enjoyed this web site and all the work that has gone into it. And, I look forward to seeing everyone at the reunion. Did not know a lot of you real well but do remember some of you so it should be an enjoyable evening. See you all there.
Hi Everyone, A HUGE thanks to the Reunion planning committee for all your hard work and efforts. Thanks to Chris Parker and all who have helped to put together this wonderful website to locate classmates and help us reminisce not only our high school years but grade school years as well.
I didn't come to Wolfson until Fall of our sophomore year moving from Riverside area and really didn't get to know a lot of you very well until junior year. Being a member of Preps helped me connect and make new friends. I've enjoyed all the comments about who's who in the pictures and your memories of teachers.
I was standing outside during my gym period at John Gorrie Jr High when President Kennedy's shooting was announced. I was wearing one of those really cute "white, one piece, gym shorts with the cuffs." Sound familiar?
I look forward to seeing everyone in just a few days. It's going to be a wonderful event to remember for many years to come.
I remember Mrs. Sellars and I'm in that picture 3rd row, front seat, reconise Beth Lyons 2nd row 2nd seat.I also remember Mrs Sellers Xmas shows, my part on one song was ding dong ding dong ect. her shows were very good. I was on my way to Miss Gambles english class, when some girl came running down the hall crying ,saying President Kennedy had been shot, can't remember who she was
Gayle, What a memory. I still wonder What happened to Coach Pat Jennings? The white haired, dark tanned, turned out to be a lesbian. (which now, I could care less if she was.) Tolerance is a beautiful thing.
Miss Molly from French Novelty would stuff us in one of those horrible white shorts jumpers for Gym Class.
I used to hate going to visit Miss Molly because if she did not have your size, she would sell you one anyway. ha
Did anyone go to Hendricks Avenue Elem School? My 1st grade teacher was Miss Sova, the one with the large purple birthmark on her face. She scared me to death until I learned to love her deeply.
I would love to see any HAES photos. If someone has any would you post or bring to the reunion?
MAGGIE, CAN WE KEEP THIS SITE OPEN AFTER THE REUNION?
Another thing I remember about Southside Grammar #7 was during the Cuban Missle Crisis, instead of having fire drills , we practiced walking down to the railroad tracks so we could load traines or box cares and head to St. Augustine (I think), not really sure where we would go. I remember taking letter homes to our parents
Jan - that's a great idea! Can this website stay open?? Someone has really done a good job on it. Thanks. It has reminded me what a great time we grew up in. So many good memories - and funny ones. Coach Jennings.... she used to work us to death in those gymsuits! And I had forgotten about Miss Molly at French Novelty! Too funny! And I do remember the Cuban missile thing. At San Jose, we were assigned to somebody's mom's station wagon to evacuate in, and had to wear dog tags and actually practice leaving the school. Anybody else remember that? How about school patrol? Only time I got sent to Mrs. Belote was with Bob Reams for something that happened in the school patrol room. Don't remember what! See y'all in a few days. Toby, I've got a poster coming to ya. :)
And Vicki, your son is in my prayers. Hope to hear a good report Sat.
While most everyone else in the USA was practicing "duck and cover" during the Cuban Missle Crisis, kids from Hendricks Avenue Elementary were quickly escorted out of their classrooms to the front circular drive of the school where a hundred or so cars with "volunteer parenta" waited us. We quickly and quietly filled in each car and took off for parts unknown. After being on the road for a few miles, I asked the volunteer where we were going. Without missing a step, the lady said "We're going to Hastings." Naturally, I asked "Why are we going to Hastings?" To which she replied "Because Hastings is the potato capital of the world and potatoes absorb radiation..."
When I went home and told my parents, they grinned and told me to never forget it!
As for the gym outfits - I'd love to hold up the one I wore at Landon in 7th grade for a few minutes... just to close my eyes and remember the days when I used to be that thin!
This has been great fun. Thanks to everyone for all of their hard work. And as to the wearing of the white gym suits, I'm with Anita, I doubt they'd fit and even if they did I'm glad mine went the way of all good gym suits. Can't wait to see everyone this weekend.
Gayle..... I remember at Hendricks the "duck and cover" under your desk, and then you would line up outside and they would put you in the next available parent's car that was in line to take you away from the school and then we all came right back. Do you remember Ms Waley, she was real short, black hair,Math teacher i think, and would throw an eraser at you across the room, and as she lead you to the office she would hit you on the back with a ruler all the way down the hall.....
JoAnne - I don't remember Ms. Waley. But I remember Mrs. Mitchell in 7th grade teaching "new math"!! I did not like that woman. Maybe because math wasn't my favorite thing to do. Thanks to Larry Newkirk for helping me get through Geometry with ??? -was it Mrs. Small? Theorems and proofs almost did me in!! Nita - I remember my volunteer mom telling us that in the event of a real evacuation we would be taken to a nearby bomb shelter! Do you think there was such a thing?? See y'all tomorrow night! Gee, I'm missing Jax.
Anyone remember Mrs Nicholes , English teacher at Landon? When my father found out I had her for a teacher, he told me to do whatever I have to do, but get out of her class, that she would fail me, She taught him at Lee , ended up I didn't have to do anything, she got me out of her class. I would like to know what my Dad did lol
Seems I remember getting under a desk to, remember seeing chewing gum underneath them
Wow... what a fantastic night last night was at the Landing..... it was great seeing everyone, can't wait for tonight.... many tks to the committee for putting together a wonderful and memorable weekend..
I HAVE ADDED SOME PICTURES, FROM THE LANDING, ON MY PROFILE, IS THERE IS A GROUP PHOTO SECTION I CAN PLACE THEM ON?
Sincere thanks to the committee!! You guys did an absolutely wonderful thing for all of us, and I know it was enjoyed by all. A 60th birthday party sounds like a cool idea, Toby!! (Not that any of us will ever be 60!!)
