Mack D. Barnett (Asst Principal)

BARNETT Mack David Barnett, 80, passed away unexpectedly on November 29, 2003. He was born October 7, 1923 in OBrien, FL and was a long time resident of Jacksonville. He served as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corp. He earned a Master of Education degree from the University of Florida and served with the Duval County School system for 32 years. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church. Mack was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sybil Greene Barnett, and brothers H.A. Barnett, Landis Barnett and Bill Barnett. He is survived by daughters Sherry Woodruff and Suzette Binford, son Mike Barnett, grandson Michael Barnett, brothers Dub Barnett and Lex Barnett, and sisters Luzona Barnett and Naomi Stamper. Services will be at 2:00p.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at Faith United Methodist Church, 4000 Spring Park Rd. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 pm- 7:00pm on Tuesday December 2, 2003 at George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Blvd. S.

Among senior administrators at Wolfson in our day, Mr. Barnett had the most unconditional sense of fairness, which made him the veritably the only one who could speak with both power and authority. Firm when necessary, he was always pleasant, even when he could have been lowering the boom on a lot of us. I found it impossible to not like the guy, even when he was saying to me, as he did more than once, though, to my relief, more often to others: "Son, that's the wrong answer." He kept a lot of us from getting into even more trouble. He was one of the good guys, and I salute him.
